Wed January 11th, 2012 - Keeping your New Years Resolutions!
So, we’re into the New Year by a couple of weeks and I wonder how many people have broken their ‘New Years resolutions? I wonder how many people have had a smoke? A takeaway during the week? Stopped their training? Had a few beers when they promised themselves that this year was going to be different?
I’ve never been a fan of NY resolutions. Although I agree that the New Year makes sense to have a fresh start to your life, but if it’s something that important, why not seize the here and now? Why wait until the clock hits 12am?
How many times have you told yourself or heard someone say the following? ‘The diet starts Monday’ or ‘I’ll start proper training next week’ or ‘Once I’ve settled in at work…’, or ‘when I’m fitter’.
Don’t get me wrong, we all suffer set backs and things that take us off course from achieving our goals, but there comes a time when the excuses must stop.
The reason why most New Year Resolutions fail? Lack of preparation and goal setting.
People expect to go from super slob, to Olympic Athlete over night without setting themselves realistic time lines, no planning, no research on the subject….and basically, no idea!
You want to lose weight? How many books have you read on the subject? Have you researched how the body uses different types of food? Have you read on how the body works? Or do you just pick up a few ‘healthy foods’ from the local supermarket and hope for the best?
You want to get fit? Have you researched the bodies different energy systems? How the body uses food for fuel? Aerobic and anaerobic fitness? Or do you get a pair of runners, go out running for 15minutes, get back and think ‘that was hard!’ and never go out again?
If something is worth a lot to you and you really want to change, then take some time and plan, research and do! If you don’t get the goal you want, research some more, plan some more and do again! Don’t just quit at the first hurdle.
If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward Thomas Edison
See you soon,
